Social Etc. has gone fanatical with the release of 32 new apps that target all of the teams in the NFL. These new apps allow fans of the NFL to follow whats going on with their favorite teams by following the tweets of the Players, Coaches, Reporters and Team Representatives. We’ve done the research and now follow the players, coaches, reporters and team representatives of all the teams in the NFL.

Dolphin Fan Static (for example) provides you access to all of the tweets by players on the Miami Dolphins. It also allows you to view the tweets of reporters that follow the team and write articles on the team. We also provide you with access to key websites and YouTube clips for the team.

In addition to monitoring information coming from the team you can also get involved with Fan Static. The app allows the true fan to show their fantastic spirit by taking a photo of themselves and then annotating the photo with sign or graphic. This photo can then be posted to their own twitter account.

The 32 versions of Fan Static are now available for free in the App Store today.

Republican Media Strategist Brad Todd just posted an interesting article on CNN Opinion concerning “What Politicians could learn from NASCAR tweet“. The NASCAR tweet occurred during the Daytona 500 when NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski tweeted a photo from his car during a red flag stop in the action. The red flag had just come out due to an eye catching fire that occurred when another driver ran into a Jet powered dryer trying to clean off the track. This tweet quickly went viral in the twitter sphere and within 12 hours @Keselowski had increased his followers 300% to over 200,000.

Brad Todd points out that political candidates in 2012 can learn a lot from this event. The driver in this case was able to grow his base of followers by 150,000 which is more than the current followers of Rick Santorum (147,000). Building on Brad Todd’s work we have created our own Top 10 list of things that 2012 Political Campaigns can learn from the infamous NASCAR tweet:

10. Comment on a national topic

9. Let people know your tweeting

8. Show your personality

7. Reference the hash tag of the event or topic

6. Interact with your new followers immediately

5. Do your own tweets

4. Include photos in your tweets

3. Tweet at Live Events

2. Tweet in Real Time while its still happening

1. Go Mobile!

Let’s take a little deeper look at our list:

10. Comment on a national topic

Brad Keselowski was not just commenting on a local event or even a regular Sprint Cup race on the NASCAR circuit, it was the Daytona 500 during a major event (the fire) which raised everyones level of interest.

For maximum exposure a candidate should go beyond their normal scope and comment on a national event like the presidential debates, major national speeches or the national political conventions. The bigger the topic / event the better.

9. Let people know your tweeting

As Brad was tweeting the Fox Sports announcers picked up on the event and promptly told the nation wide audience that Brad was tweeting on the back stretch. This obviously caught everyone’s attention and played a significant role in the increase in followers.

It would be very difficult for a politician to get the same kind of exposure that Brad did but there is still a lesson to be learned here. If your tweet is note worthy, people will take note. You also need to make sure you let your supporters know that you are tweeting, your twitter handle should become part of your contact information just like your office address and phone number.

8. Show your personality

Brad is a personable, fun guy and that shows in his tweets. His posts are not so much about his job as it is about what is going on “right now” in his life. This allows Brad to show a side of himself that may not normally be visible to the average NASCAR fan. He is able to go beyond the information we get from interviews with the media.

From a political campaign standpoint, yes, you need to be tweeting about the important issues and your positions on them. But also focus on the average everyday items that make you smile or frown. Heck even a well placed post / photo of the drudgery of the campaign trail can give voters a little more insight into your dedication.

7. Reference the hash tag of the event or topic

During the red flag delay Brad continued to tweet after the drivers got out of their cars and walked around on the track. In these tweets he occasionally referenced #DAYTONA500 . This ensured that he was in the Daytona 500 conversation, although at that point he had already became the discussion.

Candidates should do the same, make sure you include key hash tags for the event you are commenting on. It goes back to item 9 above, let people know your tweeting.

6. Interact with your new followers immediately

Soon after Brad tweeted “Fire” he was deluged with direct messages from new followers. While it was probably impossible to reply to all of them he did pick a few to interact with. Even simple questions like “I wonder how much battery @keselowski had left on his phone” was answered: “28%”. He built and then nurtured his following.

It seems like a simple enough thing to do but often times we overlook that twitter is a two way communication service. Tweets should not just be about your views but also a dialog between you and your followers (new friends).

5. Do your own tweets

The tweets coming from the back stretch of the Daytona super speedway were not coming from Mr. Keslowski’s personal assistant, they were coming from him. When you send a message to @Keselowski you get Brad!

Brad John points out that Sen. Claire McCaskill (@ClaireCMcC) and Sen. John Cornyn (@JohnCornyn) thrive on Twitter because they do their own tweeting, you should do the same.

4. Include photos in your tweets

Tweeting “Fire” is one thing, tweeting the first photo from inside a NACAR race car during a “Fire” is another thing. As you can see the photo itself isn’t that great, it’s actually doesn’t really show the fire at all. But it was cool because it came from inside Brad’s race car.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Photos from debates, events or even on the tour bus brings a sense of realism, being there with you on the campaign trail. Going back to item # 8 – Show your personality.

3. Tweet at Live Events

The Daytona 500 is a live event that a lot of people watch. People not only watch the Daytona 500 they also follow the conversation of this great live event on twitter. This audience was what Brad was able to tap into with his tweets.

Political Rallies, Presidential Debates and the Upcoming Conventions are all good “live” events that will capture the attention of your target followers. Get involved and join the conversation live as it’s happening.

2. Tweet in Real Time while things are still happening

Brad didn’t tweet about what happened the night before at the race. He tweeted live from the actual event. This made the interaction more temporal and in the moment.

This item really kind of pulls everything together. You ned to be tweeting about National, Live Events. Where you show your personality, including photos from the events and interact with others involved in the conversation.

1. Go Mobile!

Finally the thing that really made all of this happen was Mobile. Brad would never had been carrying his laptop with him in his race car. In fact there was some questioning if he would be fined for carrying a phone in his race car. This event was driven completely by the new role that Mobile is playing in everyone’s lives. Just this week Google predicted that 1 Billion People will use Mobile as their Primary Internet Access Point.

Political campaigns need to take note of this and understand that the 2012 election cycle will be unlike any other. Mobile is here to stay in a big way, twitter is a huge part of that and you need to get involved and stay active on it to get a leg up on your competition.

Will political campaigns be able to tap into this twitter based mobile market and become part of the discussion in 2012? It’s starting as we speak, more candidates are turning to twitter and mobile. Let’s hope this trend continues as were convinced it’s the best way to engage with supporters and voters.

Social Etc. announced today that “Good On Me” their new iPhone application is now available as a White Label solution for New Media publishers. With this announcement publishers can leverage the rich “Good On Me” code base to create their own unique iPhone applications that target their consumer base. Publishers can now jump start their own social media offerings using this code base that includes rich integration with Facebook enabling a viral effect to extend their own brand.

When Social Etc. developed “Good On Me” we did so with an eye toward modularity knowing that we wanted other businesses to be able to leverage our work and build their own applications. Publishers such as fashion or teen magazines /websites can cherry pick the features they want in their own application and even add new features as they see fit. They can do this on their own or Social Etc. can help them with the software development. The end result will be a powerful mobile /social presence for the publisher in a fraction of the time to build it on their own.

The Good On Me software base will allow publishers to create their own iPhone app that helps their consumers with their clothing challenges like:

How do I look in this outfit?

Trying to find something to wear for that big date?

Can’t decide whether you have something that will match those new shoes you find

These new publisher applications will allow their consumers to use their iPhone to take pictures of themselves in their clothes. Then they can mix and match your results, browse their wardrobe and if they still can’t decide post the photo on Facebook or the Publishers social media site and ask their friends / community “Does this look good on me?

Good On Me Key Features:

Capture Your Closet – Take photos of your clothes or better yet YOU in your clothes

Tag, Classify and Name – Tag your clothes with keywords so you find them later. Classify them as tops, bottoms or shoes to mix and match them. Give them a descriptive name.

Search, Find, Mix and Match – Search by name, classification or keyword. Use our Mix and Match feature to put together a winning outlet.

Fun Photo Shoots – Have fun making your own photo shoots. Our 5 second countdown timer will take 4 photos of you in your favorite outfits. Unleash the model within yourself!

Facebook, Twitter and all social networks have mobile applications that allow their participants to post photos, check their friends status and interact with their community. These services though are quite broad and don’t provide all of the proper “context” within which people live their lives. Our vertical applications address narrower markets of consumers where we can serve their needs to a fuller extent.

Our first venture which utilizes our “build it for consumers first, but allow businesses to leverage it” approach is an iPhone / Facebook application called “Good On Me”. This innovative application enables fashion conscience consumers to manage their wardrobes. They can photograph, name, tag, classify and even shop for their clothing.

We enable consumers to mix and match different items to see how they would look together. Our community can even take photos or multi shot “Photo Shoots” of themselves in their clothes and post the results onto Facebook asking their friends “Does this look Good On Me”. It’s a fun app built for people who love their clothes. Most importantly for consumers and businesses is the shopping feature that helps our community find new clothes.

Recently I noticed an AOL announcement concerning their new AOL “Editions” iPad App. It is being marketed as “The App for When you Crap” . That’s a nice attempt at viral (or maybe it is vile) marketing. Originally I thought ok that’s a bit silly. Then last week I also saw an interesting post that 1/3 of Americans use facebook in the bathroom. This coupled with Playboy’s announcement that its magazine would be available (uncensored) on the iPad was just too much (don’t ask about its connection to the bathroom).

What is going on here? All of sudden it seems like there is a rush from companies to capture every open minute of our time. Taking your iPad into the bathroom? Or maybe they feel you’ll stack your iPad on the back of your toilet with your issues of time, sports illustrated, national geographic, etc…

So that started me thinking what is next for the bathroom?

Obviously digital editions of all your favorite reading material would make sense. Clearly for access to 1/3 of Americans the social networking sites may want to tailor something specific to encourage posts and tweets from the bathroom. Foursquare will no doubt allow you to check in on your toilet.

After that I’m starting to draw a bank. I looked up the top iPad apps and found the following list of top paid iPad Apps:

Tunein Radio – Yes I could see this listening to radio while you do your business

Labyrinth – Ok, that makes sense as well search through a maze

Flick Kick Football – This is a good fit you try to kick the ball into the goal – similar to teaching your hits how to use the bathroom for the first time

Internet Radio Box – Once again motion

Backbreaker Football – This sounds a bit dangerous to play while sitting on the toilet (heavy use of motion for game play)

Stick Wars – I don’t know defending your castle from hordes of stick men….

Pocket Universe- Won’t work unless you have a ceiling skylight

IM+ Pro – Chat for when you crap… ok makes sense

SoundHound – “The SoundHound is the app for you as it can recognize songs in as little as four seconds”, enough said….

Slice it! – Puzzle game seems simple enough

What do you think, any request for proposals for iPad apps for when you crap?

In a recent article in Forbes blog post Adam Hartung wrote how about how Facebook killed MySpace. MySpace under the watchful eye of News Corp did traditional business planning while Facebook did “White Space Management” and just let it go and grow where ever the community took it.

When I worked at IBM the phrase was “Plan Your Work and then Work Your Plan”. This didn’t seem to work well for MySpace after NewsCorp bought them. I can see where a dynamic social networking site needs to have the freedom to grow into whatever the community wants it to be, but I was curious does anyone have any other examples of White Space Management in their startup?

I’m sure in most cases you still need to do the business planning piece to set your direction and make sure you have a reasonable shot to get there. But, once you are on your way you need to be flexible and go where your community takes you.

We would love to hear more from you on if and how you are using white space in your business.

Drop us a comment in the white space below….
